Spend controls

The budgets an organization administrator can set on what its keys spend, and how a budget shows up on the wire.

Organization administrators govern what their keys can spend. A budget can be set for the whole organization, a member, or one API key, and where several apply the strictest one wins. This page is written for the developer holding the key: what a budget does to your requests, and how you recognize it when it refuses one.

A budget caps spend for a scope over a period, measured in credits against the real cost of the model calls made. One credit is one US dollar. A budget set to Block requests refuses requests once it is exhausted; a budget set to Warn only only notifies.

A refused request is a 429 with code scope_budget_exceeded, the message states the budget that was hit, and nothing is created or charged. A 429 with code insufficient_quota is a different refusal, covered on Credits and billing.
